Verb/Adjective + – 았어요/ 었어요/ 였어요 past tense

To conjugate a verb in the past tense, when the word stems ends in a vowel ㅗ or ㅏ, – 았어요 is used, when it ends in any other vowel, -었어요 is added. For verbs and adjectives ending in 하다, – 였어요 is added to form 하+였어요, which is then shortened to 했어요.

E.g. 가다 -> 가 + 았어요 -> 갔어요/갔습니다/갔습니까?


E.g. 만들다 -> 만들 + 었어요 -> 만들었어요/만들었습니다/만들었습니까?


E.g. 공부하다 -> 공부하 + 였어요 -> 공부했어요/공부했습니다/공부했습니까?

Verb + – (으)ㄴ적이 있다/없다 have (not) done

It expresses having or not having a particular experience in the past. When the verb stems ends in a vowel, – ㄴ 적이 있다/없다 is used, and when the verb stems ends in a final consonant, – 은 적이 있다/없다 is added. Although the form, -(으)ㄴ 일이 있다/없다 can be also used to express the same meaning.

E.g. 이탈리아에 가 본 적이 있어요? Have you been to Italy?

E.g. 김치를 먹은 적이 있어요. I’ve eaten Kimchi.

Verb + – 으려고 하다 / 려고 하다 plan to, intend to

It expresses the subject’s intention or plan that has yet to be acted upon. When the verb stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, – 려고 하다 is added, and when the verb stem ends in a final consonant, -으려고 하다 is used.

E.g. 여름 휴가때 여행을 하려고 해요. I plan to travel during the summer vacation.

E.g. 결혼하면 아이를 두 명 낳으려고 해요. I intend to have 2 children once I’m married.

Jiyoon: Mr. Mark, what is it?

마크: 여행 안내 책이에요. 이번 휴가에 한국으로 여행을 가려고 해요.
Mark: It’s a travel guide book. I plan to travel to Korea on this vacation.

지윤: 와, 좋겠네요. 어디로 가요?
Jiyoon: Wow, it’d be great. Where are you going?

마크: 부산으로 갈 거예요. 지윤 씨는 부산에 가 봤어요?
Mark: I’ll go to Busan. Have you been to Busan?

지윤: 네. 저는 2년 전에 다녀왔어요.
Jiyoon: Yes. I went there 2 years ago.

마크: 어디가 제일 좋았어요?
Mark: Where did you like the most?

지윤: 저는 해운대가 정말 좋았어요. 그리고 국제 시장도 재미있었고요.
Jiyoon: Haewoondae was really good. And the Gookjae market was also interesting.

마크: 참, 숙소는 어디가 좋아요?
Mark: By the way, what types of accommodation is good?

지윤: 요즘은 싸고 깨끗한 게스트 하우스가 많아요. 홈페이지에서 한번 찾아보세요.
Jiyoon: These days, there are lots of cheap and clean guesthouses. Please look up the homepages.

마크: 네, 정말 고마워요.
Mark: Yes, thanks a lot.
